Dog in a Log

Hiking through the forest, working up a sweat (and a pant), thinking this looks like a good place to take a break and rest a bit. Doesn’t this sound like a peaceful escape? Enter reality… She was actually in a bright blue plastic tunnel at a dog park, but I had a different vision…

I thought about sharing both images separately before the composite, but … nah! There has to be a little mystery.

Lights, Camera, Flower!

Calming nausea with the magical pink stuff while suffering through an annoying headache that had me just this side of dizzy is no fun. A little photo therapy was essential. These were done with a single off-camera flash.

Portraiture captured my attention a few years ago and drew me away from other types of photography. I strayed from flowers and landscapes and anything else nature related because the internet was flooded with these types of photos. Everywhere I looked, there were flowers and bugs up close and personal! I think it’s time to add a little bit of that type of photography back into my life. Since about every other person is a “photographer” these days with snazzy over-the-counter cameras, not many are seeking professional photography services. Of course I would welcome any opportunities to do portraits for people, but during the long lags in between such opportunities, I’m going to do more just for myself and call it therapy! :D

Fall Snow

Our first measurable snowfall of the season. It has snowed already, but it was basically a dusting. I knew a lot of it would melt fast, so I grabbed my camera and headed out around 7 a.m.

Fall Colors in Colorado

We took a drive through the mountains yesterday. Yep, a Sunday drive!  :) We may not have much variety in fall colors in Colorado, but the yellow of the Aspens are amazing!

I heard the Aspen groves are thickest at Kenosha Pass, so we headed that way first out Hwy 285. I guess they get a lot of sun because many were already bald. Harumph! So we doubled back just a little bit and took Guanella Pass over to Georgetown, stopping to eat our packed lunch at the summit. On the way down into Georgetown, I took a photo of a big house in town at the last switchback. We ended up stopping to see what it was when we got down there and found it to be a museum: Hammil House. So we took the tour! That’s for another post, though. ;) We took the Mt. Evans exit to explore a little more, and this was probably where we saw the most colors of all.

A little bit of orange in the mix, too.

I liked this lone tree standing out in the sunlight down by a creek…

And these tall ones reaching up for the sun by the same creek…

Old School Gone Digital

There’s something about black and white photographs. I can’t put my finger on it. The mystery? Seeing something in a way our eyes don’t naturally perceive? The mood they evoke? All of the above, I believe! I think the eye isn’t distracted by too many colors. What is it about black and whites that draw you in?

Here are some of mine (taken mid-day with a polorizing filter) to help you think about that…

Here’s that last one in color…

Ha! I just realized there was a bug on my lens when I took this one! There were many little buggies out that day. I’m talking SWARMS! Can you spot the bug?

Scouting & Discovering

Thursdays might have to be all about photography. Anything and everything to do with it – whether it be shooting, editing, learning more about Lightroom and Photoshop, workshops, or scouting locations for portraits, landscapes, and nature in general. Today was an adventure in scouting locations, which lead to pleasing discoveries!

We started out at Silo Park. I can come up with about a dozen scene possibilities there. There was a small garden there with peppers, tomatillos, eggplants, and more…

Then we headed to Morrison. These were taken near Red Rocks…

Steph!

Then, at a location Steph and I want to keep a secret, there was this…

Suddenly, like a moment straight from the Wizard of Oz, we were nearly pelted with apples from a nearby tree!

Hunger (and the need for toilets) struck. So we headed into town and had Mexican food at Morrison Inn. Almost ready to get back in the car and head home, this little guy (or gal) had to be the center of our attention for a few minutes…

Never Stop Practicing

No photographer ever reaches a point where they no longer need to practice. Learning doesn’t end with understanding settings. Things start to get stale if you don’t shoot often to keep your creative vision fresh. I’ve learned this firsthand by not making time to just shut up and shoot!

It’s hard to make time every day when I work four ten-hour days at a desk job. Fitting even just 15 minutes in for shooting on those days may not sound like much, but there are only so many options at home. It gets boring shooting the same thing no matter how many different ways there are to shoot them. So planning and a little traveling is necessary. I ended up at an ecological park on Thursday, and here are some shots I came away with.

Not super exciting, and nothing I would really consider printing for my wall, but something nonetheless!

All shot with my Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens (poor-man’s Canon 24-70) at f/4.0. :)

Farmington, New Mexico

Down by the Riverside

The drive to Farmington from Denver a couple weeks ago was beautiful! Instead of going straight down 25, I went over to 285 and drove through the mountains and a huge valley that was surrounded by mountains. I don’t know why I chickened out on a making a vision for a photo come true, but I did. Now I’m kicking myself. I wanted a photo in the middle of the long, straight, two-lane highway that appeared to run right into a mountain. I could have done it. Pull-off places were hard to find, but I could have made it happen. On the way back, there was too much smoke from a wildfire. Missed opportunity.

I’m glad I didn’t miss these at the Berg/Animas Trail

OK, that bottom photo was actually in my son’s apartment. She likes to sleep on the bottom of the coffee table. :)

Light Manipulation

There are some amazing photographers who do brilliant things with light to get the shot they want “in camera”. I’ve tried. It takes a lot of time, patience, and practice. I won’t say I’ve given up, but I will say that I don’t plan on making the investment necessary and gathering a crew to carry lighting equipment for me when I shoot. I’m only 5’3″ and, sadly, I don’t work out. To say I’d like to change that would be setting myself up for failure. So I’ll just let it be. If it happens, it happens. But I digress.

Here is a sample of my own light manipulation done in my digital darkroom. The shot on the right is straight out of the can and was taken quickly while on a walk (not a true workout, don’t get excited, thought my butt muscles felt it later). :D The shot on the left draws your eyes where I want them fall – slightly below center. I could have gone more dramatic, but that wasn’t the look I was going for with this photo. It took me less than two minutes to do this, and all I had to carry on that walk was my camera with a 50mm lens on it.

You can take pictures, or you can make photographs. I prefer to make photographs. It truly is an art!
