Food, Music, & Fellowship | PWC Block Party

I’m unofficially become the official photographer of Peace With Christ Lutheran Church’s annual block party. This time of fellowship comes on the heels of Vacation Bible School each summer and includes great German food from Helga’s Deli, snow cones, cotton candy, live music by ONE15, and loads of fun things for the kids to play on and in. There are inflatable bouncers, mazes, slides (including water slides), a dunk tank, a climbing wall, and face painting. Good times!

Water slide…

Face painting…Cotton candy (this little one HOOVERED it)…Looking through another’s camera (becoming a cliche photo) as the VBS kids sang…Music by ONE15…I can’t resist a photo of a canine friend…See all photos of this event here: PWC Block Party

The Boy Next Door

It’s been a long time since I’ve known what it’s like to really communicate more than a friendly wave or “hello” with neighbors. Our next door neighbors and their friends who moved in directly across the street from them are Turkish. The grandmother doesn’t speak English, which makes for fun and interesting communication. They’re eager to help with yard work and to share food and tea. I must get some of their recipes!

While two of the boys were helping Greg in our yard, I brought out my camera and took some photos of the youngest boy, who is growing so fast! These are the four shots I printed and gave to the neighbors.

Love of Theater

When I was in high school, I knew of some kids who were involved in theater, but I didn’t really associate with them or go to any of the plays or musicals. I didn’t give it much thought. Now that I have kids of my own who are involved in theater, I have a new appreciation for it – so much so that I even enjoy the productions that my kids are not in.

You’ve seen in previous posts that I photograph dress rehearsals, and the kids take home DVDs full of images to cherish and remember this special time forever. I love doing this for them! I didn’t photograph a dress rehearsal for the latest production, but I did take my camera to one of the shows. Seated farther away than I would shoot from normally, I ended up with a ton of photos that weren’t that bad. You can see all of them here.

This is fast becoming a favorite, not for the quality of the photo by any stretch but for the action and the mood…

This is one of my favorites…

I appreciate the opportunity because it presents challenges in exposure and shutter speed. The lighting is very inconsistent on the stage. While the average Joe with a “prosumer” level DSLR may think the P on that little dial stands for “professional” because it does all the thinking for them, I learned long ago that the camera isn’t as smart as you think. Some venture on to experiment with shooting in aperture priority, but even that isn’t the best choice in most situations. As scary is it is, there comes a time to yank off the training wheels and go full manual. Then, and only then, can you control the shot. Okay, mad lighting skills will take your photography over the top, but for the camera alone … manual. It’s challenging for sure, but I love a challenge!

The other challenge is in anticipating the shot before it happens. Of all the areas I’m hard on myself, this is not one of them. Capturing a shot at just the right moment is something important to me; something I think I do a pretty good job of. (Yes, I ended that sentence with a preposition. Don’t judge!) :D

Denver’s Next Top Model | Portraits

I’ve been wanting to set up a “studio” shoot with my girls for a while. Yesterday was perfect! With the change to daylight savings time, we slept in. This made any out-of-the-house excursions inconvenient. What a fun way to bust the boredom! We ended up with some great shots, some of which looked perfectly laid out for ads. So I came up with my own ads based on specific makeup items they use. Now to see if I can get them to let me get crazy with their hair and makeup so we can do a “high fashion” photo shoot!

Bye Bye Birdie | Theater

Last week I had the pleasure of photographing an amazing bunch of young actors on stage. In addition to several children’s theater productions, this is the third high school production I’ve photographed. The first was the musical Titanic. Next was the play Love Rides the Rails. Now Bye Bye Birdie, also a musical. I’ve tried other lenses, but my favorite is still the 85mm. For the dress rehearsal, I chose a seat in the center and far enough back that I wasn’t shooting up their noses but was still able to get full-length shots of the actors.

I went in a little early and was lucky to catch someone running through a song on stage, which was perfect for testing some settings. I was determined to eliminate more blur this time, so I shot in shutter priority. I’d love to be able to shoot the next production with my dream camera. Hint to next year’s seniors… The more bookings I get for your senior photos, the better my chances are of getting that camera before your fall play next year! Don’t make me pull out my sad face and puppy dog eyes!

Confirmation | Portraits

Normally not one to do collages, I thought I’d put together another option to remember this special day. Here’s a sneak peak at one of them. I’m on number nine of 20-22 now (some might have been missing)!

Cassidy | Portraits

It was a triple portrait day! Next up is Cassidy … “Oh Girl!” She cracks me up with her fun spirit and boundless energy. Cassidy made an exception to the rule by wearing red. Often, wearing red will draw attention away from your face and to your clothes. However, with her, it totally works!

Peace With Christ Block Party | Event

Peace With Christ Lutheran Church had their annual Block Party on Friday, July 2, complete with inflatable bouncers (one with water), dunk tank, face painting, snow cones, cotton candy, food by Helga’s, and live music by Risen. I had the pleasure of photographing the event, and here are some of my favorites…

At the Park

After two postponements, we finally had a day of nice weather for the “S” kids photos. JoJo is my God-daughter and a princess full of love! She loves to play, but she’s also willing to pause briefly to pose.  Gabe is the biggest free spirit of the three. He and I get along just fine in this respect because I love unposed photos! If they made an America’s Next Top Model for guys, Christian would certainly be a contender.  This boy knows how to work the camera!  Thanks for a fun break at the park, guys!

After enduring the oh-so-painful task of posing for a few photos, a drink was in order.  Too bad the fountain was a bit unruly … but it made for some great shots!
