One Size Does Not Fit All

Like stores, photographers should come in all sizes (and price points). I hear popular photographers talk about charging what you’re worth and not undercutting the business all the time, and that always gets my stomach in a knot. You know how it gets uncomfortable when the pastor starts talking about the importance of tithing and you squirm in your seat a little? Same thing! I think it’s great for the photographers who make their living solely from photography to target the Neiman Marcus customer. They should! Way to go! The customers I hope to attract might enjoy some retail resort browsing, but they mainly shop at Target and Walmart. One size does not fit all.

This is my “about” info on my Facebook Page:

“Are you looking for special photos but suffering sticker shock from your search? Well, look no further! I’m here to help. I don’t believe that anyone should go without treasured photographs simply because they can’t afford a popular or well-known photographer. I can work within your budget to provide you with family or individual portraits to cherish forever.”

Other photographers shouldn’t feel like I’m undercutting the business. I do have a full-time job outside of photography, but I still realize that my time is worth more than $1.25/hour. I understand that people have no idea how much time goes into getting to those final images. For example, teachers and parents probably don’t realize that the 2 hours (not including prep & travel time) I spend taking photos of final dress rehearsals for school productions isn’t all it takes. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. I spend at least another eight hours culling and enhancing those images for the “ooo … ahhh” factor that you just can’t get from over-the-counter camera snapshots. I do this voluntarily for the kids, though. It’s a value of about $250-$400.

Target isn’t undercutting the retail business. They don’t steal customers from Neiman Marcus, Saks, and Nordstroms. Likewise, I don’t believe I’m currently stealing business from the higher-priced photographers. I’m providing a service to those with tighter budgets.

Impromptu Photos

I’m trying to take my camera with me wherever I go because you never know when opportunity for great shots will present itself. We were just bumming around this afternoon with no real mission other than just being out of the house since I didn’t have to work today. There was this soft, diffused light because it was cloudy, so I started making some photos.

Ali just got passed her driving test today!

Miranda, for some reason, was a less willing participant. She’s usually quite cooperative!

Connor | Eagle Scout Court of Honor

I’ve found various statistics about what percentage of Cub Scouts go on to become Eagle Scouts ranging from 2% to 6%, depending on the year I suppose. I had the honor of witnessing my first Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony last week (mostly from behind the camera). These young men work hard to achieve this … they play hard, too! Connor has such a charming and fun personality. He’s pretty much a friend magnet. :D

Full names have been removed for privacy. :)

The ceremony was held in a dance theater, which had yellow lights overhead! EEK! Between the lighting and the amount of movement, I hung out at around 1600 on the ISO during the ceremony, so there is a little grain (not always a bad thing).

Connor’s mom had a special request to photograph her with her two boys. Being in a lighting showroom, this got a little tricky. Through the magic of Photoshop, which I try at all costs not to rely on, I was able to clean up a pretty messy background.

Dining Room + Games

Now that the old and not-so-pleasant smelling carpet has been ripped out of the dining room, it’s actually nice to sit in there for a while. That eating together with no television distraction thing? Not so terrible! Even better … game time! Here were today’s games…

I’ve come to realize that not every post on this blog has to be about business. In an effort to let people know more about the real me and not just the professional me, I’m going to start posting more on a personal level as well. :)

Portraits in June – No Monkey Business!

It’s time to stop monkeying around!
Well, okay, monkeying around is a must – but let’s do portraits!

Ah, come on … I know you have a smile for the camera!

That’s a little better. Now let’s have some fun!

Great! How about a little drama?

Awesome! Work it, baby!

Whoa … wait a minute! I don’t do boudoir shoots,
but I can recommend an excellent photographer for those. ;)

This is the kind of fun you can expect to have with me as your photographer!

Even Photographers Switch to “Mom Mode” | Prom

If my daughter had been getting ready for her first prom yesterday at home, I may have done more photos in “photographer mode”. She got ready at a friend’s house with two other girls, though. I was there for the just-before-leaving shots like any other parent whose kids are heading for prom. So for the most part, I shot in “mom mode” last night. The poses were the same as for the four or five other cameras snapping away in the room, but the composition and lighting were different. Once a photographer, always a photographer … and once a mom, always a mom. The two can find a happy medium! :)

The Boy Next Door

It’s been a long time since I’ve known what it’s like to really communicate more than a friendly wave or “hello” with neighbors. Our next door neighbors and their friends who moved in directly across the street from them are Turkish. The grandmother doesn’t speak English, which makes for fun and interesting communication. They’re eager to help with yard work and to share food and tea. I must get some of their recipes!

While two of the boys were helping Greg in our yard, I brought out my camera and took some photos of the youngest boy, who is growing so fast! These are the four shots I printed and gave to the neighbors.

Confirmation | Portraits

Normally not one to do collages, I thought I’d put together another option to remember this special day. Here’s a sneak peak at one of them. I’m on number nine of 20-22 now (some might have been missing)!

Peace With Christ Block Party | Event

Peace With Christ Lutheran Church had their annual Block Party on Friday, July 2, complete with inflatable bouncers (one with water), dunk tank, face painting, snow cones, cotton candy, food by Helga’s, and live music by Risen. I had the pleasure of photographing the event, and here are some of my favorites…
